Shipwrecks of the great lakes Virtual exhibit

Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes Virtual exhibit opens

Kingston, June 7, 2024

The Great Lakes Museum is pleased to announce the launch of a new online virtual exhibit
called “Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes”

Shipwrecks are some of Canada’s most interesting historical artifacts. Yet they remain out of
reach for most people, sunk below the waves of the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes Museum
wants to help make these artifacts more accessible to you through the Shipwrecks of the Great
Lakes virtual exhibition.

This virtual exhibit helps you explore a few of the thousands of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes
and was created with the help of divers and archaeologists who work to preserve Canada’s
shipwrecks for future generations.

What stories and treasures rest on the bottom of Ontario’s Great Lakes? Go on a virtual dive to
a real shipwreck and identify artifacts you find; learn how to gather clues like real underwater
archaeologists; piece together the final moments of the most mysterious shipwrecks; or learn
about some wrecks divers have found throughout the Great Lakes.

This online project was developed with the support of the Digital Museums Canada investment
program. The Digital Museums Canada investment program helps build digital capacity in
Canadian museums and heritage, cultural and Indigenous organizations, and gives people living
in Canada unique access to diverse stories and experiences. Digital Museums Canada is
managed by the Canadian Museum of History, with the financial support of the Government of
Canada.

Access to the Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes website may be found at
