On August 7, 2024, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) announced $250,000 in funding to restore the S.S. Keewatin, a historic Edwardian-era steamship, at the Great Lakes Museum. The ship opened for tours in May 2024 and now attracts visitors from around the world, demonstrating the government’s commitment to strengthening the region’s tourism economy.
The Great Lakes Museum also received over $77,000 from Canadian Heritage’s Canada Cultural Spaces Fund to renovate their historic Pump House. This building still houses the Victorian-era steam engines and pumps that operated the dry dock. It serves as both a key heritage display and the Museum’s primary programming space. Renovations will make the space weathertight and more energy efficient, restore the historic interior, and add a ramp to the Pump Room, enhancing the visitor experience for the Great Lakes Museum.
